Damon Matson has been a meteorologist on the DC News Now team since May 2020. After covering the morning newscasts for the last two years, he’ll be delivering your forecast alongside co-anchor Mark Hall on weekdays at noon and 5 PM.
Before arriving in the DMV, Damon spent two years as a weekend meteorologist/reporter at WBNG in Binghamton, NY. While covering the various forms of weather in the Southern Tier, Damon was awarded the 2019 Outstanding Weathercast Award from the New York State Broadcasters Association.
Matson began his career while still in graduate school, covering the weather on the weekends at WTOK in Meridian, MS for two years. A native of western Pennsylvania, Damon graduated from Brockway Area High School before getting his bachelor’s in meteorology from the California University of Pennsylvania and then his master’s degree in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University.
Well-versed in the science of meteorology, Damon was awarded the 2015 NOAA Hollings Scholarship while still in school, conducting weather communications research for a summer with the National Weather Service in New Orleans. He is a member of the National Weather Association and American Meteorological Society, and he was recently granted the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal from the AMS in November 2021.
Damon has been a mentor to young, aspiring journalists and meteorologists, and having grown up in a big family he knows how important it is to be a part of the community. In his spare time, Damon enjoys going to the gym, keeping up with his favorite bands and music, following his favorite Pittsburgh sports teams, and traveling to see friends.
