"I decided to attend today in my personal capacity because I wanted to show solidarity and support with the Palestinian people who have been struggling under apartheid and who had been struggling for basic human rights for decades now," said Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Zainab Chaudry.

This comes two days after Hamas, a Palestinian Islamic militant group launched a surprise attack from Gaza.

Israel then declared war on Sunday and promised to retaliate against the militant group.

More than 1,100 people have been killed and thousands have been wounded on both sides, according to AP.

Chanudry said people from all walks of life were at the rally outside of the White House Sunday.

"There wasn't just Muslims or Palestinians. There was a very strong Interfaith showing," she said.

She said people around the DMV are left with conflicting emotions. Some expressed anger toward the Palestinian people while others - especially those at the rally - were somber, concerned as to what might happen next in the conflict.

"My immediate thought was concern for innocent life, what the consequences are going to be, what this will mean for civil society," said Chaudry.

Jewish community around DMV reacts to deadly missile attack on Israel https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/jewish-community-around-dmv-reacts-to-deadly-missile-attack-on-israel/ Sun, 08 Oct 2023 02:40:43 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1587218 WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Some Jewish community members in the DMV expressed anger following Saturday's Hamas militants' attack against Israel.

"It's horrifying. It's absolutely horrifying," said Alan Ronkin, regional director of the American Jewish Committee.

Following the attacks, President Biden offered his full support to Israel.

"You've got to imagine what would happen in this country if thousands of people were killed on a given day by infiltrating terrorists and what any country in the world would do to protect its citizens," Ronkin said.

Israeli forces retaliated, launching strikes into the Gaza Strip where more than 200 Palestinians also died.

"The recent unprovoked and continuous attacks by Israel on Palestinian towns, cities, and refugee camps have resulted in tragic loss of Palestinian lives," said the United States Council of Muslim Organizations in an email. The organization expressed its support for the Palestinian people.

Hamas killed dozens of Israelis when militants crossed into Israeli villages.

"I have good friends who were at a music festival last night down in a community called Bnei Re'em," Ronkin said. "All I can say, it was a massacre. It was a bloody massacre. And the fact that any of them got out alive was miraculous."

On Saturday evening, security remained tight outside the Israeli Embassy in D.C. as guards banned parking in front of it, while a U.S. Secret Service officer remained parked across the street.

DC residents think Mayor Muriel Bowser needs to do more to solve crime https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/washington-dc/dc-residents-think-mayor-muriel-bowser-needs-to-do-more-to-solve-crime/ Fri, 06 Oct 2023 23:49:59 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1585985 WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Operation Trident was touted this week by Mayor Muriel Bowser as yet another crime fighting success, but Paul Trantham said he wasn't impressed.

Trantham, an advisory neighborhood commissioner in Southeast D.C., said the mayor isn't making residents in the nation's capital feel safe as crime continues to rise.

"What do you do when you don't know what to do?" Tranthem said of Bowser. "She done implemented more programs and said we're going to do this, we're going to do that but what is needed to be done is to get these guns off our street."

With crime spiking all year long in the District, people who live all around D.C. have said they feel violence is overwhelming them and the crime stats are there to prove it.

According to Metropolitan Police Department statistics, homicides are up 38% with 217 murders so far this year and violent crime has spiked to 40% since last year.

"The city is back under siege. It's out of control," Tranthem said. "She [Bowser] knows that."

Bowser, who was joined by her acting police chief and the U.S. Attorney for the District, announced the arrests of 48 people charged with violent crimes who weren't following their rules of probation.

"We're going to do everything that we can to make our communities safer," the mayor said at the impromptu briefing.

Charlene Marshall, who lives in Southeast D.C., said she hears the constant drumbeat of gunfire in her neighborhood.

"I've seen the difference all over," Marshall said of the crime. "It's not safe no where you go, not just over here but everywhere you go."

Marshall said the mayor has not impressed her when it comes to combating crime.

"As for as them going one night [for Operation Trident], one day ain't going to help it," she said. "You have to constantly keep being out here in the streets and your police out here in these streets."

Gilland McGurre of D.C. said that while the mayor is trying to combat crime, violence has been overwhelming the District.

"She needs help," McGurre said. "It's basically what I'm saying because it's a combat zone."

For his part, Trantham said he wants the mayor to do more.

"In one weekend, we had six or seven murders," he said. "Where are the detectives? Where are the people that could find these people?"

Spending more on dining out? You're not alone: How to save https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/money/consumers/spending-more-on-dining-out-youre-not-alone-how-to-save/ Fri, 06 Oct 2023 22:18:42 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1586233 WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The price to dine out increased in the past year, according to the latest federal pricing data.

The Consumer Price Index report details prices to dine out increased 6.5% in August, compared to the year prior. In the meantime, restaurant sales increased during the early summer months.

Restaurant sales jumped 11.8% in July, and 9.5% in June compared to a year prior, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.

While American credit card debt passed one trillion dollars in the second quarter of this year, there are several opportunities to stretch people's dollars.

The ability to say, "no" when asked to grab a meal at a restaurant will instantly avoid an extra expense, but consumers can set a meals budget to avoid overspending.

Many grocery rewards programs are free and offer cash back on future purchases plus, exclusive discounts on certain products.

Balance transfer credit cards without a fee could offer ability to begin paying down existing debt for a period of time.

Low-interest credit cards specifically tailored for dining out can also offer cash back for future purchases. Chase Freedom, Capitol One SavorOne and Wells Fargo Autograph are among NerdWallet's best credit card picks for restaurants in October.

Consumers looking for an alternative to take out meals can consider the "Too Good to Go" app, where local restaurants and businesses can sell discounted bundles of food.
