Tasmin Mahfuz made television history when she joined DC News Now in 2015 as the first Bengali-American in the U.S. to lead a local newscast as a full-time anchor.
Tasmin anchors DC News Now’s evening news, alongside Chris Flanagan, Chief Meteorologist Janessa Webb and Sports Director Derek Forrest on weeknights. She also hosts a weekly public affairs program, Capitol Review, connecting congressional representatives in DC, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia to their constituents. The program also brings to light local and global situations from combating human trafficking in the DMV, hearing from people on the ground in Ukraine, and getting insight from a retired U.S. major general on his personal experience with the war in Afghanistan and the rise of the Taliban.
Tasmin began her career at Ebru TV, an international network, where she reported from the greater New York City region. Her assignments included covering the Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut and breaking news updates from the United Nations. She moved to Utah, joined ABC4Utah, and launched the station’s first news bureau in southern Utah before joining DC News Now in Hagerstown.
Tasmin graduated from Emory University in Atlanta with degrees in International Relations and Linguistics. In 2015, the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation awarded Tasmin the Gracies Award for Outstanding Producer in TV News. She was also recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists –Utah Chapter for her work as a multimedia journalist.
Tasmin loves the DMV and has planted roots in Maryland with her husband, Jason, and their cat Alida. Tasmin enjoys traveling the world, hiking, trying new restaurants and reading in her spare time
