(WFLA) — McDonald's famous Boo Buckets are making a return just in time for Halloween.

The fast food giant confirmed Friday that the buckets are back this year for a limited time.

(McDonald's)

The buckets temporarily replace the company's cardboard Happy Meal container, bringing customers some Halloween nostalgia.

McDonald's first debuted the Boo Buckets in 1986. The limited-time buckets were a staple during the season before they vanished from 2016 to 2022.

This year, a purple bucket joins the lineup for the first time since they were launched. The designs are called Monster, Skeleton, Mummy and Vampire.

The buckets aren't just to hold your meal, but they can be reused as candy buckets or Halloween decorations.

Customers can get their hands on a Boo Bucket by ordering a Happy Meal through the app or at the store beginning Oct. 17 through Halloween or while supplies last.

'Lewis,' Target's hot new Halloween decoration, goes viral thanks to mysterious catchphrase https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/life/lewis-targets-hot-new-halloween-decoration-goes-viral-thanks-to-mysterious-catchphrase/ Fri, 06 Oct 2023 18:56:49 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/lewis-targets-hot-new-halloween-decoration-goes-viral-thanks-to-mysterious-catchphrase/ (NEXSTAR) – Like every good horror villain, Target’s hot new Halloween decoration is mysterious, imposing and absolutely insistent on repeating a ridiculous catchphrase.

“Lewis,” as he’s been named by his manufacturer, is an 8-foot light-up Halloween decoration with the face of a jack-o’-lantern and a hooded, tattered robe. He’s also capable of saying several prerecorded catchphrases — and one, in particular, has catapulted him to viral stardom.

“I am not a jack-o’-lantern,” he states firmly. “My name is Lewis.”

Lewis has now become the star of dozens, if not hundreds of TikTok videos with millions upon millions of combined views. Many users are also filming their own trips to Target to see — and hear — Lewis for themselves.

“This feels like meeting a celebrity,” one user wrote of her trip.

“I love his sass,” another TikTok commenter said of Lewis' voice.

Some have also documented Lewis’ other sayings, which include “I’m so happy you could carve out some time to come out tonight” and “I fear nothing night or day, except a strong breeze to make me sway.”

Target debuted its "Lewis" Halloween decoration late last month, and already he's a TikTok star. (Getty Images)

Target has revealed few details about Lewis’ lore or origin story other than that he was made specifically for Target’s Hyde & EEK! Boutique line.

“Lewis is new this year, and — like all of our Hyde & EEK! Boutique items — was created by Target’s internal product design team,” a representative for Target wrote in an email shared with Nexstar.

Target did not provide any additional information on how Lewis’ catchphrase came about or why this pumpkin-headed ghoul seems to be having an identity crisis.

These details don’t appear to matter, though. Target shoppers are embracing Lewis wholeheartedly. He’s also sold out on Target.com despite his $180 price tag. (Target did not confirm when or if Lewis would be restocked, but said shoppers may still be able to find him for sale in “select” stores.)

Those who can’t get their hands on Lewis, meanwhile, will simply have to be content to find him on display at their local Target.

“If you know me, you know I rarely go into stores,” one Twitter user wrote last week. “But I think I need to go to Target so I can see the Lewis O’Lantern for myself.”

People who need to buy stamps can do so at most grocery, pharmacy and convenience stores, and most postal products and services will still be available online on Oct. 9, officials said.

Girl Scouts discontinue fan-favorite cookie, raise prices https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/life/girl-scouts-discontinue-fan-favorite-cookie-raise-prices/ Thu, 05 Oct 2023 22:26:01 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/girl-scouts-discontinue-fan-favorite-cookie-raise-prices/ (WDTN) -- Girl Scout cookie season is only a few months away, but two changes by the organization are not going unnoticed.

Chapters of Girl Scouts of America in Massachusetts and New York have already said that boxes will be sold for $6. The price increase is $1 more than last year.

The organization claims a rise in food production, labor and transportation costs as the reasons behind the price hike.

According to "TODAY," a representative from the organization said the organization has also removed the beloved Raspberry Rally cookie from its lineup of offerings.

The cookie flavor won’t be available during the upcoming Girl Scout cookie season, which typically takes place between January and April.

The Raspberry Rally was introduced as the “sister” cookie to the iconic Thin Mints, a mint-flavored chocolate-covered cookie. The fruity version consisted of a raspberry-flavored cookie that was also covered in chocolate like the Thin Mints.

The Raspberry Rallies quickly sold out soon after its online release earlier this year, which prompted sellers on eBay to sell the popular cookie with prices ranging from $4 to $330.

“If you’re buying these cookies at a huge markup, you could and should instead be using that money to support girls by buying other varieties or supporting the program in other ways,” the Girl Scouts said in a statement to "TODAY" regarding the issue.

Raspberry Rallies aren’t the only Girl Scout cookies to be discontinued; other flavors like Thanks-A-Lots or Double Dutch have also been removed in recent years, according to Mashed.

The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio website lists the following cookies the organization offer now offers (some of the cookies have different names around the country because of different producers):

  • Adventurefuls
  • Caramel Chocolate Chip
  • Caramel deLites | Samoas
  • Do-si-dos | Peanut Butter Sandwich
  • Lemonades
  • Peanut Butter Patties | Tagalongs
  • Thin Mints
  • Toast-Yay!
  • Trefoils

While Girl Scout cookie season normally begins in January, a date has yet to be announced by the organization.

Why a Powerball jackpot winner won't get $1.4 billion https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/life/why-a-powerball-jackpot-winner-wont-get-1-4-billion/ Thu, 05 Oct 2023 16:53:30 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1584428 (NEXSTAR) — After more than 30 consecutive drawings without a winner, the Powerball jackpot has swelled to an estimated $1.4 billion. But if you're lucky enough to win during Saturday's drawing, you should know — you won't exactly be an instant billionaire.

At its current size, the jackpot ranks as the third-largest in Powerball history, coming in behind a $2.04 billion jackpot hit last November in California and a $1.586 billion jackpot split by three tickets (California, Florida, and Tennessee) in 2016. It's also the fifth-largest lottery prize in U.S. history (though it could grow again before Saturday's drawing):

  1. $2.04 billion (Powerball): Nov. 7, 2022; California
  2. $1.602 billion (Mega Millions): Aug. 15, 2023; Florida
  3. $1.586 billion (Powerball): Jan. 13, 2016; California, Florida, Tennessee
  4. $1.537 billion (Mega Millions): Oct. 23, 2018; South Carolina
  5. $1.4 billion (Est. Powerball): Oct. 7, 2023
  6. $1.348 billion (Mega Millions): Jan. 13, 2023; Maine
  7. $1.337 billion (Mega Millions): July 29, 2022; Illinois
  8. $1.08 billion (Powerball): July 19, 2023; California
  9. $1.05 billion (Mega Millions): Jan. 22, 2021; Michigan
  10. $768.4 million (Powerball): March 27, 2019; Wisconsin

As fun as it is to fantasize about scoring a $1.4 billion paycheck, anyone lucky enough to beat the overwhelming odds to win the jackpot will be taking home far less than that.

There are a few reasons for this.

First, how the jackpot is paid out. Powerball jackpot winners can either take their winnings as a lump sum or an annuitized option of a one-time payment, followed by 29 annual payments that grow by 5% each year. The annuitized option is represented by the estimated jackpot size of $1.4 billion, while the lump sum is the cash value — $643.7 million for the current series.

The cash option (which you may want to think twice about taking) is what Powerball officials consider to be the amount of money needed to fund the annuity option. That means for this jackpot, Powerball officials estimate they'll have $643.7 million in the prize pool at the time of the drawing and that that is enough to fund the annuity option.

If you win the jackpot and want your money right away, you'll want to opt for the cash option, and if you want the largest payout in the end, you'll want the annuity option. Opting for the annuity payout doesn't guarantee you'll be a billionaire, though.

That is because of taxes.

While there are nine states that do not have a state lottery withholding on winnings, every state lottery has to withhold 24% in federal tax on prizes this large. After you tack on additional taxes, you'll see roughly 37% of your prize money withheld. At best, you'll find yourself with a lump sum of roughly $405.6 million, or $883.1 million total in annuitized payments, according to an analysis by USA Mega.

But, depending on where you live, you’ll see even more withheld for state taxes. A winner with a single federal filing status in Arizona would have the best outcome, receiving either $389.5 million in a lump sum, or about $848.1 million after 30 annuitized payouts, USA Mega reports. A New York winner would lose the most to taxes, with a lump sum of $335.4 million or $730.5 million in annuitized payments.

That is, of course, if they are the sole Powerball jackpot winner.

If there are multiple tickets that match the winning numbers, the jackpot will be split. Of the more than 200 Powerball jackpots that have been won since 2003, 18 have been split by two or more winning tickets.

The most recent was a $632.6 million jackpot split by two tickets, one each in California and Wisconsin in January 2022. Both winners selected cash options, equating to about $225.1 million (the cash value was $450.2 million when the jackpot was won) before taxes.

Experts do say, however, that there are certain numbers you can select when buying your Powerball ticket that will help you avoid sharing the prize (though your odds at the jackpot will remain the same, slim rate as everyone else’s).

If you're ready to try your luck, the next Powerball drawing is set for 8:59 MT Saturday night.

Powerball tickets are $2 each and sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition to Saturdays, drawings are held every Monday and Wednesday at 8:59 p.m. MT. You have a 1 in 292.2 million chance of winning the Powerball jackpot and a 1 in 24.9 chance of winning any Powerball prize.

National Taco Day 2023: Where to score free tacos, deals on Wednesday https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/life/national-taco-day-2023-where-to-score-free-tacos-deals-on-wednesday/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 02:24:30 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/?p=1582580 (NEXSTAR) – It might be hard to imagine needing another reason to eat tacos, but on Wednesday, Oct. 4 restaurants across the nation will be rolling out deals for National Taco Day.

To the chagrin of some, Oct. 4 is not a Tuesday, which is traditionally paired with tacos. According to the National Day Calendar, Oct. 3, however, is National Techies Day, National Boyfriend Day, National Fruit at Work Day and World Temperance Day.

While "taco Wednesday" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, these offers may make the day more appealing:

Chuy's

Add a ground beef taco for $1 to any entree or a $1 "floater" to any margarita. Show up dressed like a taco and you eat for free!

Del Taco

The taco chain is kicking off a new promotion on National Taco Day called "Tacoberfest," during which customers can get new weekly offers and free delivery on orders of $20 or more during the month of October. To get the delivery deal, food must be ordered via the Del Taco app or website.

Every Wednesday during the month, Del Taco is offering five snack tacos for $3.

Taco Bell

On Oct. 3 and Wednesday, National Taco Day, you can sign up for the chain's popular taco subscription plan, which Taco Bell is bringing back for this month.

For $10 you can get "30 consecutive days of tacos" as part of the Taco Lover's Pass.

Moe's Southwest Grill

Ready to think outside the box again, now that you've come to terms with "Taco Wednesday"? Moe's is launching a new limited-time Eggo Taco – an Eggo waffle instead of a tortilla, topped with adobo chicken, bacon, shredded cheese and chipotle ranch.

On National Taco Day you can get a free Eggo Taco with the purchase of an entree.

Rubio's

On National Taco Day only, order something more than just a drink, side or extra, and you can score a free a la carte taco. Use this QR code at the register and use the code TACO at checkout for online or app orders.

Fuzzy's Taco Shop

You can grab two free tacos on Wednesday, as long as you're a rewards member. Not a member yet? Tacos will only set you back $1.50.

On The Border

This Mexican restaurant chain will have $2 classic tacos, $4 Southwest chicken/brisket tacos and bottled beers for $3.

Supplies and participation may vary when it comes to some of the National Taco Day deals, so be sure to check with your local restaurant.

Costco says its one-ounce gold bars are selling out fast https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/life/costco-says-its-one-ounce-gold-bars-are-selling-out-fast/ Wed, 27 Sep 2023 21:40:00 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/costco-says-its-one-ounce-gold-bars-are-selling-out-fast/ (KTLA) – One of Costco’s newest merchandise items has been selling out within a matter of hours, CFO Richard Galanti said on an earnings call Tuesday.

"I've gotten a couple of calls that people have seen online that we've been selling one-ounce gold bars,” Galanti told investors during the retailer's fourth-quarter earnings call. "Yes, but when we load them on the site, they're typically gone within a few hours and we limit two per member."

Costco’s website shows that members can purchase one-ounce bars of 24-karat gold from Rand Refinery for $1,949.99 or a one-ounce bar from PAMP Suisse for $1,979.99. Both items have a 4.9-star rating and can’t be refunded or returned.

Some Reddit users have expressed their frustrations with trying to get the high-ticket item.

Costco customers who are fortunate enough to find the item (and be able to afford it) can also earn 2% cash back on the purchase if they have an executive membership card, which grants 2% back on all purchases.

As of Wednesday morning, one ounce of gold is priced at $1,919, according to Nasdaq.

You'll also need a Costco membership to buy a gold bar from the retailer. A standard membership costs $60 per year and an executive membership costs $120.

Shrek's Swamp now an Airbnb stay in Scotland https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/travel/shreks-swamp-now-an-airbnb-stay-in-scotland/ Tue, 26 Sep 2023 16:54:24 +0000 https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/shreks-swamp-now-an-airbnb-stay-in-scotland/ (NEXSTAR) — It may have been 13 years since DreamWorks' iconic ogre was on the big screen but Shrek is never too far far away from public consciousness. Well, in case you missed out on the recent Shrek x Crocs shoe release, the character's latest commercial outing is coming up quick: the chance to stay in Shrek's Swamp.

On Tuesday, short-term rental giant Airbnb unveiled the listing, which is located in the Scottish Highlands and is hosted by Shrek's four-legged best friend Donkey himself. What's more — the two-night stay for up to three guests costs zero dollars (more on that later).

Airbnb explains that the stay "brings a whole new meaning to the term 'treehouse.' With its clever use of forestry, charmingly rustic interiors and iconic outhouse, the swamp is certain to offer an experience unlike any other."

Among the activities listed for guests to partake in are swapping stories around a fire and "relaxing in the ambiance of 'earwax candlelight'."

There are a few things to note before trying to book, however.

Airbnb urges that while the Shrek's Swamp stay is priced at £0 a night, the stay is not a contest. Guests will be responsible for their own travel to and from Scotland, Airbnb says. Additionally, the bathroom is located 20 meters from the main living area in a standalone facility.

If these factors aren't deal breakers, then hey now — you're an all-star and it's time to wait for bookings to open. Bookings start Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. British Summer Time (which would be 1 p.m. ET on Oct. 13 here in the U.S.).

“Shrek’s Swamp is lovely. Just beautiful. The perfect place to entertain guests,” Donkey told Airbnb. “You know what I like about it? Everything. The overgrown landscaping, the modest interiors, the nice boulders, all of it. I can’t wait for guests to experience this muddy slice of paradise for themselves.”

In case you're wondering why such a whimsical location is free to stay in, Airbnb explains the pricetag is "a nod to the priceless refuge Shrek's Swamp has provided fairytale creatures of all kinds." Airbnb says it's also making a one-time donation to the HopScotch Children's Charity, which benefits vulnerable and disadvantaged children in Scotland.

Find out more information at Airbnb.
